Calcite (gemmy crystal)

Item Description

Dalnegorsk has produced some of the finest crystals of Calcite ever found. They range from gem transparent colorless examples to beautiful pink manganese-bearing varieties with other styles, colors and habits in between. This specimen was mined in the early 1990s and features a beautiful modified trigonal crystal with superb internal clarity and optimum colorless purity measuring 3.2 cm across, sitting smartly on matrix. The sharp, well-formed euhedral faces almost give off the appearance of a trapezohedron (like Garnet). The crystal is undamaged, as far as I can see with the naked eye, though there is one small spot on the bottom where it was attached to a bit of matrix, and the indentation still remains. A gorgeous "jewel"-like specimen of this classic and fine quality material.
Ex Richard ("Rich") A. Kosnar collection (1946-2007), one of the premier mineral dealers and collectors of his day. Rich was originally from New Jersey, but spent the majority of his life in Colorado. He was the namesake for the rare zirconium phosphate, Kosnarite, one of the few dealers to have this honor bestowed upon him.
