Calcite (gemmy crystal)

Item Description

It's rare to find Calcite specimen from the Xianghualing Mine without any associated Fluorite, especially a BIG isolated gemmy crystal on matrix like this. The piece was mined in the late 1990s, and stands out as one of the better examples we've seen from the locality in terms of quality, aesthetics and crystal size. A large, compressed, trigonal crystals of colorless and GEMMY Calcite measuring 6.6 cm across, is beautifully perched on the underlying matrix to create a show and fine quality cabinet sized display specimen. The piece sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. The crystal is essentially damage-free, as I can't find any nicks or dings with the naked eye, and there is even a second smaller "jewel"-like Calcite on the lower portion of the specimen, that is nearly water-clear in clarity. A truly impressive and striking display piece from what is certainly one of the top specimens producing localities in Hunan. Valued at $4,000. From the collection of Brian Kosnar.
