Item Description

A striking, highly unusual jackstraw cluster of coated amber calcite scalenohedrons rests on blue to lavender fluorite on this rare old-timer from the famous Minerva No. 1 Mine. The impressive large calcite spike is 6.0 cm long. Ross Lillie thought the coating might be barite. We showed the specimen to our resident PhD. Mineralogist Tom Campbell, who suggests it might be a clay coating, as it flakes easily. Ex Ross Lillie Collection No. 0418 and older material, probably mined in the late 1970s. A very showy, highly unusual and rare style of coated calcite on the fluorite from the Minerva.
