Item Description

This locality was known all the way back in 1669(!) for its optical-grade calcite known as "Iceland Spar" and was mined commercially from 1855 to 1925 (Mindat). In 1975, the locality recieved special status as a national monument and collecting is prohibitied. This old specimen has 7 pearly, modified calcite crystals on druzy quartz with the largest crystal being 1.6 cm. The calcite has a light pink reaction in long wave UV light. A fantastic example of these historic, important and very hard to find calcite crystals. This is from the collections of Doug Toland, Gawan Fiore, and Alex Venzke. Comes with a custom base!
