Item Description

A trio of golden amber calcite grew on top of one another and on a sliver of matrix. This is an old piece from upper New York. Under a long wave UV light, it is phosphorescent for a few seconds. This calcite was deaccessioned from the Carnegie museum collection in 2003. This specimen was part of the William W. Jefferis collection, acquired for the museum by Andrew Carnegie in 1904. This is 1 of 60 calcite specimens Jefferis had listed from St. Lawrence county. Old museum records show that Jefferis acquired this calcite from A.E Foote. The earliest he could have acquired this piece was in 1875, when he first started buying from Foote. Exhibited in the inaugural Young Mineral Collectors case at the 2019 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Ex. Alex Venzke. This is a fine, large miniature on its own right, provenance aside!
