Calcite (ex Dave Bergman Collection)

Item Description

The Camp Bird Mine above Ouray, Colorado is one of the most classic of all the Colorado ore body localities. It is renowned for its wonderful sulfide specimens, i.e., Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite and Galena, and has also produced some very attractive Calcites. This specimen features a pair of sharp, well-formed, soft pinkish color scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 6.7 cm aesthetically flaring off matrix. Smaller cubic Fluorite crystals and minor additional Calcite scalenohedra can be seen on the piece. Very little damge. The terminations of the Calcite crystals have small "teeth"-like stepped faces, but are not damaged. I can see a tiny cleave near the top of the main crystal, otherwise the piece is in superb shape. These specimens are becoming impossible to obtain these days, and good sized display specimens like this go for a good price on the market these days. From the collection of Dave Bergman, a Colorado miner (the foreman and primary person in charge of recovering specimens at the famous Sweet Home Mine near Alma, Colorado during the late 1970s) and the maternal grandfather of Brian Kosnar.
