Item Description

An astounding, large, impressive display piece of the classic and beautiful Calcites from the Pugh Quarry in Ohio. This robust and highly aesthetic display specimen featuring a few fine quality, well-formed, scalenohedral crystals with a rich golden color, and good internal translucency when backlit dramatically flaring off a matrix coated by little translucent vitreous Calcite crystals. The main Calcite is doubly-terminated and measures 12.3 cm long, and the smaller (if that's a fair way to describe it) Calcite is also doubly-terminated. The piece is in fine condition, though there are a few little contacts (one on the termination of the main Calcite), so it's not completely pristine, but it's incredibly rare to find absolutely perfect examples from this locality, especially in such large dramatic display specimen. Pieces like this are virtually impossible to find on the market, and if you collect worldwide Calcites or minerals of Ohio/Midwestern US these are a must-have for any fan of the species. Valued $8,000. The piece originally belonged to Dr. Francis Hueber, a paleontologist who worked at the Smithsonian.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 14.1.1.1 OH.1; 0230 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
