Item Description
This imposing intergrown cluster of sharp, translucent calcite rhombs with extreme waxy luster has a striking preferential coating of iron oxides on one end. This is a surreal 360-degree piece in feel and quality and is in great shape, with the attachment on one end. Ex Frank Hissong and Cynthia Payne Collections. We need some help from our customers. This fine and uncommon piece could be from Grauves, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France or Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France? The labels are ambiguous. Either way, this is choice French calcite. ANSWER FROM A FRENCH COLLECTOR: Marne and Savoie are distant areas... Since Savoie looks quite sure, as the number of the department (equivalent of the county in the States) 73 is right... I thought it could be a general Maurienne and not Marne local name... maurienne is the namE of the main river in the area (the name means "Mauvaise riviere" because the water level is capricious, and floods occur from time to time)...
