Item Description

Tsumeb is considered by many to be the most important and impressive mineral locality in history. Hundreds of mineral species were found there, but what makes this mine so significant, is that the vast majority of the minerals found there are either the best, or near the best examples of their respective species ever found. Even common minerals like Calcite were found in outstanding specimens. This piece is a wonderful full-sized cabinet hosting several good sized, sharp, well-formed, rather gemmy, compressed rhombohedrons of Calcite measuring up to 6.5 cm on edge, sitting on matrix. The crystals have an alluring silvery hue internally, which grades into a starkly contrasting reddish tone from iron oxide inclusions at the base. A touch of olive-green Duftite can be seen on the matrix creating a lovely accent against the reddish coloring. There are a few nicks on the Calcites, so the piece is not pristine, and if it were totally perfect, I could easily see it in the $5-6K range retail. Still a wonderful big display piece of this classic material from this prestigious mine.
