Item Description

From the well-known Ton Mawr Quarry near Cardiff in Wales, this is a rich, softly-colored, and attractive specimen of Calcite. The crystals range from smooth and sharp to being heavily modified by parallel growths, a signature habit-modification for Calcites of this area. The crystals are up to 1.4 cm in size, and at the corners you can see internal, preferential zoning. The gentle fluorescence of these Calcites further allows you to see this zoning, though it it more on the subtle side rather than dramatic. Typical for this quarry, this is a fine example of these classic, rhombohedral Welsh Calcites. Recently deaccessed from the Tim Sherburn collection.
