Item Description
A wonderful historic Calcite specimen from this prolific silver mining district in central Germany. The Calcite specimen from St Andreasberg can vary widely in habit and sometime color, and are high sought after by collectors of European classics. This specimen hosts sharp, translucent, bi-colored (white and pink), blocky hexagonal crystals of Calcite sitting on a bit of matrix. The largest crystal measures 4.1 cm across. The pink color in the Calcites is due to iron oxide (likely Hematite) inclusions. There are actually a few different white/pink shades that can be seen various sections of the crystals, so it's not just a bi-color specimen, but truly a multi-color example of these great old Calcites. Overall the piece is in good shape, though the lower bottom edge is contacted where the piece was separated from the pocket wall. Please watch the full video for this piece as it's notably different on all sides in terms of appearance. From the collection of Richard ("Dick") Philip Hauck formerly of Bloomfield, New Jersey and now a resident of Franklin, New Jersey. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
