Calcite and Orpiment

OUTSTANDING combination piece, of Calcite and Orpiment, from old 1990s finds in Hunan, China. The fine, mm-sized needles of Orpiment range from red-orange to yellow, and the superb luster makes each and every Orpiment crystal stand out. Mostly in small, radial clusters, they are distributed extensively around the matrix. However, the true centerpiece of this cabinet-size specimen is a MAGNIFICENT 4 cm, doubly-terminated, twinned Calcite. GEMMY and lustrous, with fabulous, finely-tiered faces, it is adorned with Orpiment crystals, and creates about as an aesthetic a visage as you can imagine. A classic old Chinese specimen, shown here in our African material due to an accidental packing of the box back in the collection room (and a preview of 3000 Chinese pieces to come).
