Item Description

A showy large cabinet sized specimen from the historic Prospect Park Quarry in New Jersey. This famous locale is sadly gone now, and will never produce any more specimens. The piece hosts several soft yellow color, translucent, scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 4.8 cm sitting on a layer of sparkling Quartz on basalt matrix. The Calcites are in good condition for the most part, though one of them is contacted on the upper portion where it grew against the pocket wall, and the main crystal has a rough spot on the lower left corner. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. The piece comes with a typed label from Wulff on one of his famous 3x5 index cards that states the piece was acquired from Philip Evanoff.
