Calcite

Item Description

This fine, large cabinet specimen from the Dexter Quarry in Rhode Island features a number of Calcite scalenohedrons richly covering the presentation side of the matrix. Ranging up to 2.5 cm, many of these Calcite crystals are doubly-terminated. The silky luster highlights the lemon chiffon to maize yellow colors, which are so easy on the eyes as you admire the piece. There is some cleaving of the crystals, mostly along the periphery, as you would expect. Dexter Quarry was active from 1640-1943, and it is worth noting that local geographic changes resulted in an updated location from the original labels. Much better in person, this was previously in the collections of Dr. Usher Parsons, the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, and Chris Stefano.
