Item Description

Calcite is by no means a rare mineral, but good gems are certainly much less common on the market, especially in a larger stone such as this. It takes a skilled hand to facet Calcite due to the brittle nature of the material, along with the multiple cleavage planes that have to be carefully navigated to prevent a stone from falling apart while it's being cut. With that said, if you're fortunate enough to get your hands on a well-cut Calcite, it's a real treat due to the fact that they can be found in larger stones and they can have a bit of liveliness due to the excellent birefringence and double refraction of the material. This stone is a good sized, impressive, fine quality, PALE pink colored "oval brilliant'" cut gem from an undisclosed locality in Mexico (possibly from Charcas). The stone is nearly eye clean and looks beautiful in person. A significant stone for its size, quality, beautiful color and excellent cutting. The high retail value on this gem is $830.00.
