Item Description

A RARE and exceptionally sculptural old-time multi-generation calcite from this extinct open pit iron mine in the famous Bancroft, Ontario area. The dramatic pristine mounded 360-degree "pineapple" is covered with striking hematite-tinted dogtooth calcite crystals, to 2.0 cm. ALL of the many spikes have interior phantoms of an earlier generation of calcite scalenohedrons, adding real pizzazz. A third generation of gemmy drusy colorless to yellow calcite preferentially deposited on the scalenohedrons adds even more character and contrast. This striking piece was probably recovered in the 1950s while 33 meters of overlying Paleozoic limestone was removed to uncover the Precambrian ore body. The mine closed in 1978. See: https://www.mindat.org/loc-15212.html. Ex Chet Lemanski Collection and acquired in 1993 from Rob Rodomsky. Rare and oustanding calcite from the locale for those who collect such rare occurrences. And, it happens to be pretty as a bonus.
