Item Description

Attractive, satiny, light golden colored trigonal crystals of Calcite are arranged in a beautiful formation over minor grey Smithsonite-coated matrix from the world-famous Tsumeb Mine. The crystals measure up to about 2.7 cm across, and show good luster with pleasing internal translucency when backlit. The piece is very showy and largely undamaged, and it actually sits nicely horizontally on its own without the aid of a base or clay, or you could have a custom base made to allow the piece to display vertically. The many styles and colors of Calcite from Tsumeb is about as diverse as it gets for the species from a single locality, and this a good specimen to fill a slot in a Calcite or Tsumeb suite for its distinctive appearance.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#62 T), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
