Item Description

Here we have a beautiful, and hard-to-find specimen of Calcite from Serifos Island in the Aegean Sea of Greece. While this historic locality is best known for its renowned for Quartz "Prasem" specimens (which are included with green Actinolite, not Hedenbergite), there are other minerals found on the island, including these unique and distinctive Calcite. This piece features a group sharp, well-formed, attractive rhombs of Calcite measuring up to 2.4 cm sitting on matrix. I love the distinct, broad secondary modifying faces on the crystals, a fun lesson in crystallography. The Calcites are actually translucent when backlit, and some of them show a reddish-brown hue in areas, even though they are essentially colorless inside. No major damage and quite showy. From the collection of Brian Kosnar.
