Item Description

There is a wide variety of Calcite crystals from Charcas, ranging from white and opaque to a light golden hue with vitreous luster and good internal gemminess. The latter crystals are some of the best examples of the species from any Mexican locality. Their attractive form, size, luster and gemminess make them very desirable for collectors. This piece is a great example of these beautiful Calcites with highly lustrous faces, a silky/gemmy interior, modified trigonal faces and eye-catching striations all over. The front of the piece is in superb condition, but the back of the crystal is broken where it was separated from the matrix. It's difficult to properly illustrate the quality in photos or a video, and it honestly looks better in person. A great piece of these pretty Calcites from Charcas. From the collection of Colorado mining legend, Dave Bergman. Dave is now retired from mining, but spent many years underground, including as the foreman and primary person in charge of recovering specimens at the famous Sweet Home Mine near Alma, Colorado during the late 1970s. He is also the maternal grandfather of Brian Kosnar. See Dave's photo mining at the Sweet Home on page 58 of Peter Bancroft's book "Gem and Crystal Treasures"
