Calaverite (rare Telluride) (ex Gary Weaver Collection)

The Cripple Creek District in Central Colorado has produced over 23 million ounces of Gold since the 1890s. As a matter of fact, the largest and richest gold mine in Colorado (formerly the Cresson Mine - now called the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine) is still active and produced 320,000 ounces of Gold alone in 2019. The majority of the Gold found in Cripple Creek is actually in the form of gold-bearing telluride minerals such as Calaverite. This piece is a classic example of this well-known but rare material featuring bright, shimmering, silvery colored crystals of Calaverite measuring up to about 2 mm sitting on volcanoclastic rock matrix. We have photographed the crystals with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. A beautiful example of these wonderful specimens from the richest gold-producing district in Colorado. From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019).
