Item Description

Brazilianite is the namesake species for the country of Brazil. The mineral was first discovered during WWII in Brazil and described by Dr. Fred Pough at the American Museum in New York. This piece a sharp, yellow-green color single crystal of Brazilianite with decent translucency when backlit. A good quality piece that is complete on all sides. The faces of the crystal are smooth and fairly lustrous (not etched). It's a good quality specimen, and even though the species has been around for nearly 80 years, the best crystals are still those from Brazil. Specimen weight is 22.85 grams. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
