Item Description
A classic and sculptural old-time nodule of dense carving grade bubbly malachite botryoids from the historic and extinct Burra Burra Copper Mine. The striking, variably-sized and form, rich green lustrous to matte finish botryoids reach 2.4 cm. The primary open pit and underground mining period was from 1845 to 1877. A new open pit mine started in 1969 to recover low-grade carbonate ores and closed in 1981. "Gem-quality botryoidal malachite made the mine world renowned during the 1845-77 mining period" (MINDAT). See the 1994 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 25, No. 2. A fine old-time botryoidal malachite from the primary mining period from this famous locale. Mass is 154 grams.
