Item Description
"Blue earth" is the name given to diamondiferous kimberlite, the igneous rock best known for sometimes containing diamonds. Formation occurs at depths between 150 and 450 kilometers (93 and 280 mi) below the earth's surface under extremely high temperatures and pressures. Mineral specimens are EXTREMELY RARE from this Tanzanian diamond mine, ranked as the largest economically exploitable kimberlite pipe in the world. This is a RARE 141 gram mass of granular greenish-blue "blue earth" kimberlite. From an East Coast collection. The handwritten note was written shortly after Queen Elizabeth's visit to Tanzania on July 19-22, 1979.
