Item Description

Bixbyite is best known for the Wah Wah Mountains / Thomas Range in Utah, but the N'Chwaning Mines in South Africa have produced some of the finest examples of the species, though in a reduced quantity. This piece is a good overall example of this attractive material featuring notably sharp, rather lustrous, jet-black, cubic crystals of Bixbyite measuring up to 1.0 cm on edge, sitting on massive Manganite matrix. There are a few thin prismatic crystals of what could be Gaudefroyite on the back of the piece for a nice touch. The Bixbyite crystals are in good condition overall, but there are few small nicks on some crystals. I really apprecaite the fact that the display side of the piece features multiple eye-visible, good sized crystals of Bixbyite, which is rarely the case when it comes to specimens from Utah. From the collection of Colin Manlove.
