Item Description
This gem aquamarine has a classic blue color that is still unique to older material from Brazil from the gem rough mining heyday of the 1960s and before: One imagines it is in fact very old historic material, as the Rock Currier Collection number glued to the bottom is 543, and probably dates from his early travels to Brazil (1960s?). In person, the color is SPECIAL, a vibrant rich color that was fairly described in the old German gem trade as "seafoam" back in the day, but which is not in mineral collector vocabulary now because it really has not been found in decades in large quantity. It has a touch of green in it, that sets it apart from both modern Brazilian material and from Pakistani aquamarines, and in this case gives a more saturated color. Notice how gemmy the large vertical crystal is? Sitting in front of it, are two 4-cm-tall parallel secondary crystals, that accent the gemminess above them. If you look closely, you see that one of them has a pointed (prism) termination and one has a flat (basal) termination! How can that be, literally side by side and grown at the same time in history in the same conditions of growth, that they have such radically different terminations!? So, the piece is beautiful on its own merits, but with an extra bit of interest factor as you look closer. It is infinitely more rare, and unique, than any number of Pakistani contemporary aquamarines we might offer up here, and has a special color and appearance that immediately say "old Brazil!" 141 grams, and a full and imposing small cabinet size. It stands on its own, without need of a base.
