WHY does aquamarine from around the world generally have one typical shape, of extended hexagonal crystals; and yet morganite and goshenite from most localities tend to be more hexagonal and flat? We really do not know. However, Afghani aquas do seem to form just like Afghani morganites, in these flat hexagonal shapes, unlike Pakistani material. It is a mystery! So this is a gemmy, very transparent, glassy aquamarine from Afghanistan that could sit next to a typical morganite, and it really is a conversation piece to start thinking about why these things form the way they do, differently in different environments. Why should Afghani aquas be different shapes than Pakistani aquas (in general). That being said, this is just a damned fine, gorgeous, machined-looking gem crystal period, no matter where it is from! These are also quite rare, and this is the one kept by Gene in his famous single crystals suite of Afghani and Pakistani pegmatite minerals. Valued $2500-4500.
