Item Description

This is honestly the first specimen of Beryl we've ever had to offer from this locality. The Big Mine in Alstead, New Hampshire is a pegmatite locality that dates back to 1810 according to the listing on mindat.org. This locality is also called the Davis Mine, the Gilsum & Bowers Mine, the Gilsum and Victory Mines, the Golding-Keene Mine, the Rhoda Mine, the Tripp No. 2 Mine and the Victory Mine. All of these names refer to either previous names of the mine itself, or former mines that were incorporated into the larger pit of the Big Mine as it expanded over the years. This piece is a nice representative example of Beryl with a soft yellowish-green hue. The piece is by no means a complete crystal, but it does have a couple well-formed prism faces along with a defined pinacoid. When you turn the piece on its side and look down the "c" axis, you can see the hexagonal outline of what was once a fairly big overall Beryl crystal. If you collect pegmatite minerals, worldwide Beryls, or minerals of New England, don't miss out on this one, as you might not have a chance to get another from this locality for a long time. From the collection of Brian Kosnar.
