Item Description
Wow, what an cool old locality specimen from a place that I frankly did not know existed. This piece comes from the Triple Chance Mine in New South Wales, Australia, an old pegmatite locality that was a source of beryllium, feldspar and mica, but also produced crystallized specimens of Beryl (up to 1 meter long according to mindat.org). The few specimens I found for reference all have the same golden hue, with no real gemminess, but still pleasant to look at. This piece features a couple of hexagonal crystal groups of Beryl measuring up to 3.7 cm long, with good luster and well-defined faces, sitting on beige colored Feldspar matrix. The top of the main Beryl group is not complete, but it's still a showy overall example that would make a great addition to any worldwide Beryl suite or a collection of minerals from Australia. These are RARE, virtually impossible to find on the market, and they only exist in old established collections like this one. Don't miss out, we don't have another one to offer. Please note that the label accompanying this piece states that the Triple Chance Mine is in Broken Hill, but the entry on mindat.org for the locality states that it's actually 35 km southwest of Broken Hill. I'm sure old labels used Broken Hill as a point of reference years ago to give an idea of where this mine was located.
From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974 ( https://www.mindat.org/photo-326405.html ).
