Item Description
A large partial crystal of yellowish-green / pale blue Beryl from the famous pegmatite region near Haddam, Connecticut. You can read about this locality more on midat at http://www.mindat.org/loc-193458.html. This is a hefty piece (weighing over 3/4 of a kilo!) but is mostly a reference specimen for all intents and purposes. There are some visible prism faces on the piece, but it is rough on most of the exterior. It does pass light when backlit, and is actually gemmy enough in areas to produce some small gemstones. The area around Haddam was a major mineral producer dating back to the 1760's, and specimens are highly sought after by collectors, even large clunker pieces of Beryl like this one. The piece comes from the collection of noted Colorado geologist, Allen Heyl (Ahyelite) who purchased it from mineral dealer David Crawford.
