Item Description
An incredibly rare association specimen from the Hashidate area in Niigata Prefecture, Japan featuring 4-5 mm blue inclusions of Benitoite along with stark lemon yellow spots of Strontio-orthojoaquinite along with beige-tan Ohmilite and minor blue-grey Magnesioriebeckite in massive Albite matrix. The type locality for Strontio-orthojoaquinite and Ohmilite is the former town of Ōmi (where this piece was found), and according to the entry on mindat.org, "On March 19, 2005, Ōmi, along with the town of Nō (also from Nishikubiki District), was merged into the expanded city of Itoigawa". This is the only specimen I can remember having to offer from the locality featuring all of these minerals together on the same piece. The identification of each species is confirmed by the fact that this specimen came from noted Japanese mineral expert, Alfredo Petrov, and his hand-written label accompanies the piece.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 9327; 59.1.1.2 JA.1. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
