Item Description
Bauxite specimens are VERY RARE from any of the numerous localities listed by MINDAT for Georgia. There are NO photographic examples in MINDAT for the state. MINDAT lists 20 bauxite producing localities for Floyd County. The Holland Mine in Floyd County was the first producer of aluminum ore in the USA (MINDAT). Orbicular bauxite nodules are embedded in all sides of the weathered small cabinet matrix from a locality near Rome. Bauxite is a mixture and rock, comprised of iron and aluminum hydroxides/oxides. Ex John Whatley Collection, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022) and acquired in 1983. A classic and RARE Georgia example of the species and locale.
