Item Description
Baryte seldom occurs with copper, and certainly not with copper inclusions within the crystals! This remarkable, fine African thumbnail specimen is nearly unique. It came from a single pocket of this material brought out by Chris Wright in the mid 1990s (I recall because I was there and bought this from him then - Rob Lavinsky). This specimen was one of the few fine thumbnails, and stood out for the gemminess and transparency. With individual crystals to 1.7 cm, it is a full size - and unique - thumbnail. With light, it glows a golden color and you can clearly see crystallized copper inclusions within. I am not aware of any other occurrence or find, since that time. This specimen came back to us, nearly 30 years later, and is still memorable as a thumbnail from one of the most surprising mineral combinations we have yet seen from this amazing African copper and cobalt mining locality. This specimen is donated by THE ARKENSTONE and is part of the 2023 Dallas Mineral Collecting Symposium benefit auction, with proceeds benefiting Mineralogical Record, Rocks & Minerals, Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, and mindat.org.
