Baryte (uncommon locality)

Item Description

A fairly hard to find Baryte specimen from the Blaengwynlais Quarry featuring sharp, lustrous, gemmy bladed crystals measuring up to 7 mm, sitting on iron oxide matrix. It should be noted that the piece was erroneously labeled as a Calcite from "Blain Gwinas" on the old Joe Vajdak label and mentions a "very rare" crystal habit for the Calcites, but they are clearly Baryte, and the heft of the piece helps support this fact. With that said, Barytes from this locality are quite rare on the market and if you collect Welsh minerals or worldwide Barytes, this is something that you may not have in your collection, so don't miss out.

Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
