Baryte on Sulfur (Kidwell Coll.)

Item Description

Sparkly spherical aggregates and rosettes of glassy, translucent, two-toned beige barite blades richly cover the sculptural large specimen from the famous Machow Mine of Poland. The attachment on two sides and an end reveals that the barite is a crust on top of the crystallized sulfur matrix. This well-known open pit sulphur mine is famous for excellent sulphur, baryte and celestine specimens. Ex Al Kidwell Collection. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
