Item Description

Impressive and sculptural small cabinet two-sided and parallel-growth barite crystals from this less well-known Cumbria barite mine. The glassy sharp colorless tabular orthorhombic crystals have striking water-clear chisel terminations above the translucent bodies. This barite mine has produced very fine specimens that are distinctively different from the great blue and golden barites from the long extinct iron mines of Cumbria. Ex Bill Panczner Collection and acquired in the 1960s to 1980s. Bill was the first Curator of Earth Science at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in 1974 and the author of the 1987 book Minerals of Mexico. It is the most thorough summary of the subject. Read about Bill in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive at: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/labels.asp?colid=841. Probably older material, but no proof. An exceptional essentially pristine English barite from the Silverband Mine with only modest lower periphery wear on the back side. Hard to obtain in such quality, and with such gemminess!
