Baryte - fine cabinet piece, circa 1800s

A very choice, high-quality cabinet specimen composed of glassy, gemmy to translucent, tabular blades of Baryte from the well-known old mines at Baia Sprie. The presentation side has sharp, zoned, overlapping blades up to 4 cm, with just a touch of iron oxide providing an attractive color accent. The reverse side is not to be ignored, with thicker, tabular Barytes interlocking in all directions. For the age and for the mineral, it is worth noting how little wear there is, particulary on the front side. Baia Sprie's ores were mined from early 1300's until 2006. These pieces are part of a century-old Italian collection that was recently acquired. Its historic nature, aside from the sheer age of the specimens, is reflected in how dramatically geopolitical borders have changed since these labels were created. Valued $1500-2500 - this is a REALLY fine specimen, and in great shape. Maybe needs a little cleaning!
