Item Description

The historic and important Sherman Mine in Leadville, Colorado was the source of arguably the most impressive golden Baryte specimens from any Colorado locality. Sadly the mine closed a few decades ago, and inevitably all of the specimens dried up on the market, so they are coveted and highly prized by Colorado collectors. This attractive miniature sized specimen is an eye-catching, tabular group featuring lustrous, translucent, golden color Baryte crystals with no matrix. I love the "teeth"-like terminations that can be seen on three side of the piece, very rare for the material. Most Barytes from the Sherman featured single tabular crystals with single terminations, so to find multiple "stepped" terminations on a piece like this is significant in my mind. A great Colorado classic from the late 1970s. Priced at $900. From the collection of Richard ("Rich") Kosnar (1946-2007), well-known mineral dealer and collector from Colorado, and the namesake for the phosphate species, Kosnarite.
