Item Description

An aesthetic Baryte specimen from the Osarizawa Mine featuring several bladed crystals with a secondary overgrowth of additional little Barytes along with additional tarnished brassy metallic Chalcopyrite crystals. The largest Baryte measures 5 cm, but it's contacted on a couple sides, and the largest undamaged crystal measures 4.7 cm across. The piece does have a saw mark on one side.
This specimen came to George by way of Joe Dague and Dr. Andrew Sicree, but was originally in the collection of Dr. Hiroshi Ohmoto, Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University. George's 3x5 card states, "Upon learning that Dr. Ohmoto's collection of mineral of Japanese Kuroko type deposits was to be discarded, Dr. Sicree requested permission to salvage and was given 3 days to do so, whereby the specimens were acquired by Dr. Sicree at no cost." The piece was collected by Dr. Ohmoto on November 26, 1976.
An interesting locality note: George's label states that this locality was mined by U.S. POW's as slave labor during WWII.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 10,044; 28.3.1.1 JA.1. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
