Item Description

A GEM quality, soft steel-blue color "fishtail"-shaped crystal of Barite is aesthetically set atop translucent, pearly, white to colorless Calcite matrix. The Barite measures 1.5 cm long, and even though it's not completely damage free, it's still a fine quality example of this hard to find material. The piece was found near Little Fountain Creek in El Paso County, Colorado. This creek is just east of I-25 on the southern end of Colorado Springs. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with a typed collection label from Wulff that states he personally collected the piece. I have never seen a piece of this material before, so it's a great opportunity for somebody to pick up a good quality gem blue Barite from a unique locality in Colorado.
