Item Description
This specimen is at leat 40 years old, and probably older as it resembles other Barites from Hartsel that I have seen which were found in the 1960's and 1970's. This area has produced some of the best known "blue" Barites from Colorado, and these specimens are sought after by Colorado collectors. Here we have a great display piece featuring sharp, lustrous, layered, bladed, soft blue color translucent Barite crystals measuring up to 4.2 cm free of matrix. A good small cabinet of this hard to find material with just a bit of a contacted crystals. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with a typed label from Wulff on one of his famous 3x5 index cards that says it was self-collected.
