Item Description

There are two premier localities in Colorado for golden Barite. The Sherman Mine in Leadville and the Eagle Mine in the ghost town of Gilman. This piece is from the latter and is a fine cabinet sized display specimen of this classic material. Dozens of very sharp, lustrous, gemmy, beautiful golden colored crystals of Barite measuring up to 6 mm sit atop a odd looking layer of hardened clay matrix. Minor Siderite "rosettes" can be seen on the piece. Very little damage and really attractive in person. You just can't get these anymore, and if you collect Colorado or cabinet sized display pieces, don't pass this one up as they have completely disappeared from the market. From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019). It should be noted that the underside of the piece has a typed number 1076 from Richard Kosnar, along with a hand-painted number 0899 from an unknown dealer / collector. Gary was an electrical engineer who worked for many years for Hughes Aircraft in California. You can read Gary's obituary here https://www.dcourier.com/news/2019/apr/27/obituary-gary-richard-weaver/
