Item Description

A huge and superb, 7.9 cm, tan, barite "ball" is aesthetically set on a large plate of bedded, silicified limestone coated with sparkly, drusy quartz on this exceptional LARGE CABINET specimen from the much less well-known and now-closed Gordonsville Mine, near the famous Elmwood Mine. Two clusters of highly lustrous, rubyjack sphalerite crystals are a super accent. A trivial bit of bruising to the barite is certainly not a detraction. Barite and quartz are rare from the Gordonsville, so this is an exceptional combination specimen from this locale. Ex Walt Gaylord Collection - he was for decades the mine geologist for the Elmwood, Cumberland and Gordonsville Mines. His note indicates, that the piece was collected in 1984 from 58N #8 within the mine. Valued at $1000-1250 for size, quality and rare combination. 3.3 pounds or 1.5 kilos.
