Item Description
Here we have a wonderful example of the famous Baculite fossils from Montana. I'm not certain if this is from the Bearpaw Formation (Bearpaw Shale), it was only labeled as coming from Southern Phillips County. The species for this material is Baculites compressus, and dates from the late Cretaceous formation (75-80 million years ago). These ancient cephalopods are fairly well-known from this locality. This piece not only shows the well-preserved Baculites, but the best aspect is that there are multiple spots featuring beautiful multicolor iridescence with flashes of pink, green, gold, blue and lavender.
