Item Description
Lane's Quarry is well known for producing superb crystals of Babingtonite, arguably the finest from the United States along with those from the Roncari Quarry in Connecticut. This piece is a fine quality miniature featuring a beautiful group of dark greenish-black, highly lustrous, well-formed Babingtonite crystals sitting on white/colorless Calcite with minor associated Datolite and Prehnite. The entire Babingtonite group measures 2.9 cm at its longest dimension, and is in very good condition, though there is a separation mark on the left and right side of the lower portion of the group where it was once intergrown with the pocket wall. The piece displays well as you can see from the photos, and it's a wonderful classic display specimen of these now elusive, and highly sought after specimens. Priced at $2,750 in our inventory. The piece comes from the collection of F. John Barlow (1914-2004). John assembled one of the greatest and most well-known mineral collections of the second half of the 20th century of 5,000 high-quality specimens. Barlow was the winner of the Ed McDole Memorial Trophy at the Tucson Show in 1975 and 1978, the Walt Lidstrom Memorial Award in 1993, the Paul Desautels Award in 1993, and the highest honor, the Carnegie Mineralogical Award in 2000 {per the Mineralogical Record website}. The book, The F. John Barlow Mineral Collection is a must own for any serious mineral collector, as it is one of the most comprehensive books showcasing a single collection ever written.
