Item Description
Here we have a remarkably rare specimen of Azurite and Malachite from the lesser-known Boko Songho Mine in Republic of the Congo. According to Demetrius Pohl, this locality lies about 25 km west of the famed Mfouati Mine. Boko Songho is a decent sized copper mine, but specimens are virtually non-existent on the market. What makes this piece even more significant is the fact that it features AZURITE, which is almost never seen from any copper mine Republic of the Congo. Malachite is not unheard of from multiple mines in the either the Pool Department or the Bouenza Department, but Azurite is almost impossible to find. This piece comes with a label from Spirifer Minerals, who personally acquired the piece at the mine, so I know the locality is genuine. While Azurite is by no means a rare species, to find a piece like this is a big deal, and a must-have specimen for any fan of secondary copper minerals or worldwide Azurites. The specimen hosts a good coverage of beautiful saturated blue color semi-spherical aggregates of Azurite in rather sculptural formations, which are associated with gorgeous velvety forest-green colored Malachite. Overall the piece is in very good condition, as the top / display side is essentially undamaged, but there is a point of contact on the underside where it was removed from the pocket wall. It's not hyperbolic for me to say that this is like the BEST Azurite we've ever had to offer in the auctions from any locality in Republic of the Congo (not to be confused with Democratic Republic of the Congo - formerly Zaire). It's not another Azurite and Malachite, it's a significant locality specimen, and it's also showy and pretty to boot! From the collection of Jelani Daniel.
