Item Description

Mineral specimens from this OLD Pennsylvania (started in 1732) open pit and underground iron mine with secondary copper are relatively uncommon. Well-formed secondary copper minerals of azurite or malachite are RARE and this is an exceptional and colorful combination. Lustrous, rich azure-blue azurite microcrystals are festooned on the face of the very hefty banded microcrystalline magnetite matrix. The deposit also included recoverable gold and silver with some cobalt and nickel. Much of the operation came to an abrupt halt in June 1972 when floods from Hurricane Agnes flooded the underground mines. Neither underground operation was reopened, but ore recovery continued from the eastern end of the open pit until June 30, 1973 (MINDAT). Specimens of this combination richness and quality are RARE. Ex Charles Noll Collection # 1835. Hefty iron ore at 700 grams mass. A MUST for the locality or species collector. Value?
