Item Description

A wonderful showy display specimen of these old, classic and desirable Axinite-(Fe) specimens from the Obira Mine. The piece is almost a solid group of Axinite crystals, highlighted big an attractive 3.7 cm group sitting prominently atop the specimen, surrounded by dozens of smaller crystals. All of the crystals have good luster and sharp, well-formed faces, with that classic clove-brown hue for which the species is known. Minor Quartz can be seen on the lower edge of the piece. There are a few rough spots, so the piece is not completely pristine, but it's big and eye-catching, and certainly one of the better examples of this elusive material that we've had to offer in a while.
Valued $4,000.
The piece was originally part of the collection of Gene Sensel, former research organic chemist for Texaco Oil. Sensel purchased the specimen in March of 1962 from Sugiyama and Co.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 6084; 410 JA.3. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
