Item Description

A classic old-time specimen, really rich overall and comprised of dozens upon dozens of prismatic, well-terminated crystals of Atacamite up to .7 cm, on matrix. This is a more unusual habit, and much better in person yet. The color is a deep forest green, and the pristine crystals have very good luster. This is an excellent example of the species, from one of the best old locales. The Moonta mines are a long-abandoned group of copper mines, worked from about 1860-1923 (per MINDAT). Specimens like this, of any size greater than a thumbnail, only come out of museums and old collections these days. Formerly in the collection of E. Mitchell Gunnell, who had assembled one of the finest mineral collections in the US, museums included. Valued $2000
