Item Description

Antlerite specimens are rare from anywhere but came at their best and richest from the famous Chuquicamata Mine, a very important locality for so many unique copper mineral species. Sparkly emerald-green and dark green micro crystals cover all sides of the porphyry matrix plate. Excellent, very rich, uncommon, older material from this noted locale. The piece was originally identified as brochantite (incorrectly) and then later re-labelled as atacamite (also incorrectly). Ex Hoadley, D'Agostino and Richard Hauck Collections. NOTE ADDED: The "Atacamite" listed on your April 10th auction is probably Antlerite. The Chuqui Atacamites occur in altered sulphide veins where the matrix is a reddish jasper while the Antlerites occur on white altered porphyry and often have a cross-vein texture similar to the lower photo. See the posted Atacamite samples in Mindat.org. The original designation for Antlerite from Chuqui was Brochantite and only later was Antlerite recognized.
