Item Description

A beautiful example of the classic Artinite specimens from the Artinite Pit on Picacho Peak in San Benito County, California. A large percentage of the world's finest examples of this uncommon hydrated magnesium hydroxy carbonate have come from this locality. This piece features a classic white radiating "puff ball" comprising dozens if not hundreds of tiny Artinite "needles" measuring 1.5 cm, associated with golden-orange colored Desautelsite (a rare hydrated magnesium manganese hydroxy carbonate mineral named after the former Smithsonian curator, Paul Desautels) on Serpentine matrix. No damage, and very showy / presentable. A fine quality example of these top-tier Artinites. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-187224.html
